Announcing our 2013 Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike! Dirigo Bound starting on March 14.

Happy New Year to all! It’s a pretty exciting year for myself, Lindsey and my boyfriend Miles. We will be thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail starting on March 14, 2013. We’ll be starting our hike on Springer Mountain in Georgia and hiking the approximately 2,180 miles north to Katahdin in our home state of Maine. Yes, you heard it right. We’re WALKING from Georgia to Maine and hoping to finish in August or September later this year. Are we crazy? Well, we’re crazy excited if that’s what you’re asking.

I’m starting this blog to keep our family, friends, and anyone interested in thru-hiking and our story updated throughout our journey along the AT (short for Appalachian Trail). Up until we leave, I’ll be posting about our preparations for the trail and am planning on regularly updating every week once we’re out on the trail. We’re exactly 10 weeks from our start date and we couldn’t be more ready to get down to Springer!

Up at the top of the page there are some links if you would like to learn more about us, our hike, our gear, and I’ve also answered some of the frequently asked questions that I’ve been asked in the past year. You can follow our blog and get email updates when I publish a new post by clicking the “Follow” link in the upper left hand corner. And please feel free to leave comments and questions. I would love to know who is following our story and to answer any questions anyone may have about our thru-hike!

Besides the fact that our excitement is mounting, we are purchasing gear, planning our mail drops, and reading anything and everything about the AT.

While you may not be able to be out there on the trail with us, you can be a part of our journey right here on this great thing we call the world wide web.

Tons of people have asked us why we are leaving our jobs, our families, indoor plumbing, and the 4G network to live out in the woods for half the year?

I think it’s a simple answer.

Why not?

Best wishes to you both on your decision to tackle the A.T. – it’s going to be a life-changing journey!

When people ask me why I would want to hike thousands of miles, and sleep under the stars, I respond by saying “How could one afford not to?” Being immersed in nature for months on end, carrying all that you need to survive on your back brings to life parts of our soul that have been buried by society. People come out the other side of a long distance hike Truly Alive.

Have an awesome hike, it is indeed a Life Changing Journey. You will be a whole new person when you climb Mount Katahdin. When you reach the end, remember to take all that you have experienced and all that you become with you into your life off the trail.

I am a regular at Bookstacks in Bucksport and just said goodbye to Miles. I will be checking in on your blog the next few months. Best of luck to both of you!
