Day 91: Leroy A. Smith Shelter to Delaware Water Gap

June 13, 2013

Today’s mileage: 20.2
Total mileage: 1289.3

We woke up super early this morning so that we could beat the worst of the rain. I was up by 5:30 AM and we left at 6:30 AM. A record start time for us! There were more rocks today, of course. Lots and lots of them. But, it was also our last day in Pennsylvania! The state is known for its rocks, but I have a feeling they’re not going to end as soon as we cross the New Jersey state line.

I did something today that I never even imagined that I could do. I really wanted to beat out the afternoon rain and I was so looking forward to the free hot dog dinner in DWG, so, I hiked the entire 20 miles without stopping. I ate on the go and kept moving. It did rain in the morning with some rumbles of thunder. I was wet and my legs were shot from all of our long days of hiking, so the faster I got to town the better. I was so focused on our destination, I just kept moving. We got into town at 3:00 PM to find the church hostel full. We weren’t surprised with the rain and all. We are tenting on the grounds though and got in a hot shower.

We were also lucky enough to be here tonight for the weekly hiker potluck dinner here at the church. The food was so good, all home-cooked by church members. There are a ton of hikers here tonight; many of them we haven’t met before who have been ahead of us for awhile. I’m really glad we were here for the dinner because I needed to eat a good meal. I’ve lost 2.5 pounds since Harpers Ferry. I guess that’s what happens when you hike through the entire state of Pennsylvania in 11 days. Yikes!

We have a shorter day planned tomorrow and we will be meeting up with my parents tomorrow to spend the weekend with them for my birthday, which is also on Father’s Day this year! I’m really excited to cross another state like tomorrow into New Jersey and to hang out with my parents for a few days.

And now, we rest.
