Day 100: Graymoor Spiritual Life Center to RPH Shelter

June 22, 2013

Today’s mileage: 18.8
Total mileage: 1424.6

The trail in New York today continued to be concentrated with short, yet steep ascents and descents. At least the trail seems to be more well-marked in this area than it has been. We didn’t get lost today! The mosquitoes were awful near Canopus Lake this afternoon. We took a break near there and I was looking forward to a good rest off of my feet. We only use DEET when absolutely necessary, and we didn’t put any on this morning. Seconds into our lunch break, we were attacked by swarms of mosquitoes on all four limbs. As we left, we put on DEET, a little late might I add. The backs of my arms were covered in bites as was the area around my left sock. You learn out here that there’s always something to complain about, whether it’s the cold, the ice, the rain, the snow, the heat, the bugs, or any number of things. But we all complain together out here, so at least we have our camaraderie.

As we hiked past the far side of the lake, I could hear kids playing in the water. There’s a beach at the lake and I so wanted to jump in and swim. We didn’t feel like adding an extra 2 mile found trip to our day, so the beach trip didn’t happen. We’ll hit plenty of lakes and ponds right on the trail as we move farther north however.

We are tenting tonight on a nice, grassy spot near the shelter. There aren’t as many people here tonight as last night, but still a good crowd. We met Night Rider tonight, a thru-hiker from Winter Harbor, Maine! It’s not too far from Bucksport, so it’s really cool that we met someone who lives so close to where we grew up.

We ordered a pizza tonight in celebration of 100 days on the trail. We devoured the large cheese pizza and washed it down with some lemonade. The shelters with pizza delivery are a luxury out here and we figured we deserved it. 100 days is a long time to be hiking! And we’ve still got about 50 days or so to go. I was looking at the map of the entire AT in our guide book today and telling Miles how crazy I still thought it was that we had hiked so far already. He then accused me of being a sensationalist. I retorted, “but it is sensational that we’ve hiked so far!” Sometimes I wonder if I’m living in a dream. And I guess I sort of am.

I have had the idea in my head for the past two years to thru hike the trail. It has been fun to check in on your blog every few days to learn what you have encountered and how far you’ve made it. Congratulations on 100 days! Maybe I’ll be out there before too long, but in the mean time sharing your experience is great fun. Safe journey to you and your hiking partner.
